The O-1 is a temporary work visa for aliens of extraordinary ability — for a track record of success in arts, sciences, business, education, athletics, or motion picture and television.
Categories
Three standards, one strategy.
USCIS provides three standards: O-1A (extraordinary ability in sciences, education, business or athletics — the most demanding), O-1B (arts), and O-1B (extraordinary achievement in motion picture and television). The category covers virtually any field, provided you can show recognition beyond the ordinary.
Compared to other work visas, the O-1 is unusually flexible: it is valid for up to three years, renewable indefinitely, and you may work for more than one employer in New York or anywhere in the U.S.
01
O-1A — Sciences, Education, Business, Athletics
A small percentage at the very top of the field. Sustained national or international acclaim required.
02
O-1B — The Arts
Distinction in the field, demonstrated by prominence, awards or significant critical recognition.
03
O-1B — Motion Picture & TV
Extraordinary achievement, evidenced by leading roles, critical reviews, box office or commercial success.
Evidence
Major award — or three of the criteria.
Evidence either consists of a single major internationally recognized award (such as a Nobel Prize, Academy Award or Grammy) or at least three from the list of regulatory criteria: lesser nationally or internationally recognized prizes, membership in associations requiring outstanding achievement, published material about your work, judging the work of others, original contributions of major significance, scholarly authorship, employment in a critical or essential capacity for organizations of distinguished reputation, and a high salary or other remuneration.
If those criteria do not readily apply to the occupation, comparable evidence may be submitted to establish eligibility.
